1.1 Curriculum and Instruction: Environmental Issue Instruction
4 of the Biology classes are working on an Art Integration project with the Art teacher, Mrs. Holter and the Biology teacher, Mrs. Hope. The classes are working on improving, and repairing the current school garden. One of the task they first wanted to accomplish was creating a larger garden sign to let everyone know what the area is used for. Many people she the area but don't realize it is the school garden until they come out to the area.
Mr. Hopp's Biology classes are learning about urban gardening during the Spring of 2017. To help them learn about urban gardening they have been starting to growing vegetables in doors. They have transferred some of the vegetables that are not as sensitive to frost in one of the raised beds in the school garden. The rest of the plants will be transferred in April when frost is not as much of a danger. While they are waiting to plant the vegetables in the garden they are going to repair the hoop house on March 24, 2017. Repairing the hoop house includes replacing the plastic that was taken down due to holes, and put a new weed mat down.
Ms. Scott English Language Learner class is currently working on a project for mother's day (2017). This project will be an integration of ESOL(English), science and art. They are going to grow flowers in their class. As the flowers grow they are going to record their observations in their journal and read Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. Ms. Scott will also be teaching the plant growth cycle, and relevant vocabulary to the students. After the plants grow larger they will transfer them into a homemade decorated plant pot. The final assignment will be to write what a mother means to them. They will present these flowers and essays to their mother or mother figure in their life. Ms. Scott is using lesson plans from Seedfolks to plan these lessons.
