2.1 Water/Pollution Conservation
In May of 2015 students went into the Bayview community to clean, and paint 22 storm drains. While they cleaned and painted the storm drains the students gave out flyers that were created by the students to community members about how the community could help protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
On October 14, 2015 members of the Class of 2016 went into the Bayview community and cleaned up the neighborhood.
The Class of 2017 will be completing another neighborhood cleanup in the Bayview community on March 25, 2017 as a part of their day of service.

The Green team have been participating in activities sponsored by Baltimore Beyond Plastic. The first event was a trip to Annapolis, MD on February 8, 2017 to visit the Maryland General Assembly. Their the students were able to watch a video on how a bill is passed, tour the historic rooms and chambers of the Maryland State House, and view a session in the House Gallery. Before we left we were able to see a few of the individuals that represent our neighborhoods at home and meet the individuals response for sponsoring the bill to ban Styrofoam use in the state of Maryland.
The next event 2 members of the Green Team attended was the rally at City Hall in Baltimore on March 3, 2017 for banning Styrofoam use in Maryland. This event was attend by council members, and Blue Water Baltimore, a group working with Baltimore Beyond Plastic to ban Styrofoam.
2.2 Energy Conservation
On October 12, 2015, 31 students came to the auditorium to listen to Baltimore Energy Challenge presentation on how to conserve energy. This lead to five students writing a grant for the HUB grant to start an initiative to conserve more energy at Patterson. On October 16, they came in to write the grant.
On October 23, 2015 two 12th grade students (Myka Collins and Nykera Keys) from the Green team went around the school and put turn lights off stickers on light switches. They wrote a script to say to teachers about conserving energy and looking out for more information to come from the Green team about energy conservation. They put up 50 stickers in classes and offices around the building.

This year Patterson High School was selected to participate in the Power Down Energy Reduction Competition. This competition is running from February 27 to March 24, 2017. We are competing against six other schools. To help the staff at Patterson Reduce energy use the students have created a check to use during energy patrol, made posters, and sent out periodic emails to let teachers know how to reduce energy use and to let them know how the school is doing with conserving energy.
2.3 Solid Waste Reduction
Every Thursday, students in grades 9-12th, the Recycle team collects recyclable from classes and offices around the building.
The Recycle Team is made up of the following students:
- Nan Wang
- Yamen Khalil
- Franck Kabinda
- Bishop Armstrong
- Kabang Nseya
- Mbuya Masengo
- Pampha Kadariya
- Purni Tamang
- Karen Abduel
- Tesfalem Buluts
Kelly Hope, and Ke'sha Green along with the Patterson Dance team collected gently worn shoes for Angel Bins to earn money for the items the Dance team need to perform. Angel Bins will give the Dance team $1.50 per lb of shoes and then send the shoes over to Africa to redistribute.here to edit.
This spring (2017) the Green Team will be working on creating laminated recycle labels for the walls and areas around the recycle bins. We do a great job recycling but students often put chip bags, candy wrappers, etc. in the recycle bins. This not only attracts mice but also forces staff members to through recyclable items in the regular trash. These signs will be made on March 25, 2017 during the Class of 2017 day of service.
2.4 Habitat Restoration
2.5 Structure for Environmental Learning
On May 28 and 29, 30 tenth grade students created signs for the school garden. One sign was selected to use as the main school garden.
Students in grades 9-12 have been actively participating in growing vegetables in a school garden for the last six years.
Students built 2 benches during the weeks of February 27 and March 6 2017. They are going to build a third bench. The bench will be decorated by three art classes starting the week of March 27. The classes are in the planning stage and after will decorate them. For example one class plans to decorate their bench with flags from different countries to represent the diverse student population at Patterson. Afterwards the benches will go in the tranquility garden. This project should be complete by the second week in April.
After making the first two benches for the tranquility garden and receiving compliments on the work that they did the students were motivated to expand the tranquility garden. Teachers and other staff members have volunteered to purchase materials or give donations to the garden club to help them purchase additional wood and other supplies to make their dreams come true. Fingers crossed the tranquility garden expansion expected to be completed by June 2017.
2.6 Responsible Transportation
2.7 Healthy School Environment
Students in Mr. Hopp's classes will be creating planters. These self-sustaining planters will be constructed out of recycle 2-liter soda bottles. The project will help his students practice two principles of sustainable science. First, his students will be making self-sustaining planters to exemplify the importance of water conservation. If constructed well, these plants will only have to be watered every couple of weeks. In addition, his students will be building a healthier school environment by creating an oxygen rich environment. If successful, Mr. Hopp plans to have students deliver these gardens throughout the building to not only show what they have created, but also to more importantly positively impact the entire school community.
Bottle construction began February 11, 2016.

Below you will see images of two students successfully preparing garden beds and planting our in-class grown kale plants. The last pictures are pictures of rain barrels that Ms. Hope and Mr. Hopp's class painted. These rain barrels collect the water that we use in the garden.
Mrs. Hope and Mr. Hopp students have been working hard to prepare the garden for the spring. They plan to have the hoop plastic replaced, and crops planted by spring break (April 2017).
