GREEN TEAM
Students applied for the Green Healthy Smart Challenge Grant to ask for funds to start a cooking club and have funds to plant in the garden this year. We received the grant for $1300 dollars. We have started a small version of the cooking club and have been focusing mostly on getting the garden up so that not only this year but in future years we will be able to plant, grow and harvest vegetables and herbs to use in the school garden.
A couple of years ago students created a garden sign out of crafts such as beads, acrylic paint, glitter and wood. Even though a sealant was placed on the signs the weather elements messed up the signs. This year we decided to created a mosaic garden sign. We started the sign on December 22, 2016. It was completed April 21, 2017. The sign will be mounted and placed in the garden within the next few weeks. |
The Patterson Green team is made up of students that recycle, participate in a cooking club, work in the school garden, and/or make sure the school work towards conserving energy. The Green Team meets twice a month during lunch from 12:33-1:09pm and as needed throughout the year.
The Green team have been participating in activities sponsored by Baltimore Beyond Plastic. The first event was a trip to Annapolis, MD on February 8, 2017 to visit the Maryland General Assembly. Their the students were able to watch a video on how a bill is passed, tour the historic rooms and chambers of the Maryland State House, and view a session in the House Gallery. Before we left we were able to see a few of the individuals that represent our neighborhoods at home and meet the individuals response for sponsoring the bill to ban Styrofoam use in the state of Maryland. |
Patterson Green team participated in the Power Down Challenge from February 27, 2017 to March 24, 2017. The Green Team noticed that the highest daily consumption was around 10am. To help reduce the energy used during that time of the day the Green Team made posters, created a energy patrol checklist, and sent out emails to staff members. To prepare for this the Green Team met 5 times.

SCHOOL GARDEN
The school has been being added to for the last 6 years. However, in the last two years without an Ameri Corps staff a the school to coordinate the garden full time the garden has sustained some neglect. The plastic from the hoop house was ripped, and the irrigation system is not working properly. This year along with planting we wanted to get the hoop house new plastic and get the irrigation system fixed if possible. To prepare spring planting we cleaning the 5 raised garden beds, took out and replaced the dirt in the hoop house, and put new plastic on the hoop house. We are also in the process of using stones to pave under the learning area structure so that students don't have to walk in mudd after it has been raining. |
TRANQUILITY GARDEN
Starting in March Senior and some Green Team members have started to make benches for the tranquility garden. Three benches have been made so far. The Art students with the help of Ms. Holter are painting the benches before we place them in Tranquility garden. The students have become so involved with the tranquility garden they designed other things they want to build. We are going to try to have everything done soon so teachers can use the garden next Fall. The Tranquility Garden is still under construction as of May 26, 2017. |
